Ecuador's amazing landscape is comprised of numerous mountains, volcanoes and hillsides that keep visitors busy reaching for their cameras around every turn. Even more amazing is the fact that some of these volcanoes are still active to this day!

Tungurahua, whose name means "throat of fire", is an active volcano located in Ecuador's central mountain range, or Cordillera Central. The volcano gives its name to the province of Tungurahua. Volcanic activity restarted in 1999 and is ongoing as of 2008.

Chimborazo is another inactive volcano and Ecuador's highest summit measuring 6,267 meters. Its peak is the spot on our planet farthest from the Earth's core.

Cotopaxi is a volcano in the Andes, located about 75 kilometers south of Quito. It is the second highest summit in the country, reaching a height of 5,897 meters. It has one of the few equatorial glaciers in the world and is clearly visible in the skyline from Quito. It is part of the chain of volcanoes around the Pacific plate known as the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Imbabura is an inactive volcano in northern Ecuador. Although it has not erupted for at least 14,000 years, it is not thought to be entirely extinct. Covered in volcanic ash, the slopes of Imbabura are especially fertile.

Cayambe is the name of an inactive volcano located in the eastern mountain range, or Cordillera Oriental, a branch of the Ecuadorian Andes. It is located in the Pichincha province some 70 kilometers northeast of Quito. It is the third highest mountain in Ecuador and has a permanent snow cap. The town of Cayambe takes its name from this volcano.

Antisana is a volcano of the northern Andes. It is the fourth highest volcano in Ecuador and is located 50 kilometers southeast of the capital city of Quito. Antisana presents one of the most challenging technical climbs in the Ecuadorian Andes.
